Our world’s ocean is facing some big challenges. Marine pollution, entanglement in fishing nets and boat strikes, among many other human practices, contribute to declining populations of many marine species. Georgia Aquarium leads groundbreaking research and conservation efforts, both in their facility and in the ocean, to expand the scientific community’s understanding of our ocean and its magnificent animals. By studying animal health, behavior, and migration patterns, researchers gain valuable insights that contribute to the protection of wild animals and their habitats.

Since 2004, Georgia Aquarium’s field research team has been involved with tracking, rescuing, and researching a variety of marine animals. From whale sharks to sea turtles, manta rays to corals and so much more. Every breakthrough in research brings us closer to understanding and protecting these magnificent creatures, helping turn the tides for ocean awareness. Georgia Aquarium is the only aquarium in the Western Hemisphere to house the majestic whale shark and manta ray. Focusing on animal health, they apply what they learn to also help these animals’ wild counterparts. Aquarium veterinary staff and researchers continue to study the growth, behavior, health and genetics of these species in their Ocean Voyager habitat. They are one of only five aquariums licensed as a Class R research facility under the Animal Welfare Act, which is the highest standard of establishing ethical review of animal research for advanced scientific understanding.

A recent contribution from Georgia Aquarium and its partners was the development of new tagging technologies that allow greater understanding of manta ray habits and migratory patterns. Research like this contributes to better conservation decisions, and by partnering with Georgia Aquarium, we’re helping to ensure a brighter future for marine life everywhere. Support their research and make waves for these magnificent, mysterious creatures with every pair sold!
