Beats Poverty — 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all students in low–income countries left school with basic reading skills. Room to Read envisions a world in which all children can pursue a quality education.

Reduces Child Mortality — A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.

Contributes To Maternal Health — Women with higher levels of education are more likely to delay and space out pregnancies, as well as seek health care and support.

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, they develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
