Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, they develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

Literacy is the foundation for all future learning, yet there are still 750 million illiterate people in the world. Two thirds are women and girls, and an additional 250 million are not learning in primary school.
Education is the key to a healthier, brighter future:
• 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills
• A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five
• Income per capita is 23% higher in countries with more equal education
Room to Read envisions a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities.

They collaborate with local communities, partner organizations and governments to work towards their vision, where primary school children become independent readers and girls complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions.

Since 2000, Room to Read has benefited more than 11.5 million children.

Together, over 3,226 schoolbooks have been provided
