On March 22nd, we celebrate World Water Day. Humanity unites to illustrate mindfulness and care towards the water and sanitation crisis, inspiring and reminding the world around us that we have the power to make a difference.

A simple glass of safe water can save us from the scars of disaster. As seen domestically with the Flint Water Crisis, safe water is a gift never to be taken for granted. Crises such as this exist all over the world, which is why we and our friends at Water.org have joined together to share all that water can give!

As supporters of Water, we believe that water gives _____. In this game of madlib, we believe that water can be represented by just about any adjective. Hope, life, joy, inspiration... How would you fill in the blank? Here’s a suggestion:

Water gives strength.

This is the story of Renuka, taken from the “Water Gives” World Water Day campaign by our friends at Water:

Water gives Renuka strength.

Water was once the source of all Renuka's struggles. She had to walk far and wait in line to get her drinking water, and it made her absent for work. She had to carry heavy vessels, full of water for herself and her siblings, and it hurt her head, her spine, her arms, and her legs. And the water was often unsafe for drinking.

So when a Water.org partner approached Renuka, and told her about WaterCredit, she took the loan immediately. Thanks to a new, household water connection, Renuka is free from the debilitating pains which once plagued her, and the water that flows from her new tap is safe to drink, keeping her whole family healthy and happy.

Renuka's water connection gives her strength, and the ability to earn a living.

As we celebrate World Water Day, Renuka’s story is a gentle reminder that 663 million people lack access to safe water. That’s 1 in 10 people who are unable to rely on access to planet earth’s gift of clean water.

Looking for ways to support this issue? Gratitude for water can be displayed in our everyday lives. You can make everyday World Water Day by taking action in ways that make a lasting impact! Celebrate safe water by taking action:

  • Take shorter showers
  • Brush your teeth like a champ - turn off the tap
  • Enjoy a glass of safe water
  • Take a Conscious Step in socks that provide 18 months of safe water
